Car Control Skills Course plus Advanced Road Driving

Venue: Automotive Proving Ground, Nuneaton, Warwickshire.
This is a full day course covering skid control and handling skills, followed by a half day advanced road drive. This provides a unique blend of training to develop car control for more focused and safer driving.
The Mira automotive proving ground is booked exclusively for the morning session. Their wetted range of low traction surfaces are second to none. This is a rare oppurtunity to gain access to this fantastic teaching aid.
It’s just you and the instructor, Carolyn Barker for the full day. Carolyn will discuss your aims with you, prior to the course date, so she can tailor the course’s itinerary to exactly suit your ability and what you want to achieve.

Course Content
This car control course can cover all or some of the following depending on your personal programme:
The morning session:
- Wetted skid control areas, consisiting of the large concentric circle with three different low grip levels and the straight basalt tile wetted strip.
Through practise understand what understeer and oversteer is, how to deal with it and know how to avoid it in the first place.
Also, in this safe environment, there is lots of oppurtunity to play!
- Practise, on these areas, with your stability control systems on and switched off so you understand and feel exactly how much help stability control gives to keep the car in a stable state. With the systems off improve your sense of feel on the controls to be able to act on the clear feedback given as an accomplished driver.
- Drive on the handling track to develop and refine the techniques to achieve smooth and balanced cornering and change of direction and speed. These will directly transmit to your on-road driving.
Afternoon session:
Through discussion, Carolyn will plan a road route to take in any element of road driving you wish to focus on in your car.
Easily accessible from the morning venue are some fantastic country roads, busy motorways, towns and urban areas.
- Country roads: develop skills in use of vision, taking, using and giving the information received. How to drive corners to a system so each corner is driven confidently and smoothly with maximum stability and control. Never find your self saying “well I didn’t know the road!!” Know where and when to make overtake manoeuvres.
- Motorway driving: Learn to “find your bubble of space”, be aware of the changes in types of and volume of traffic on our motorways, and the behaviour of other road users. Leave and enter motorways progressively and fluently.
- Town and Urban driving: Practise and understand taking in the masses of information through planned driving at controlled speeds. Be smooth and progressive with out ever exceeding the speed limit.
- If required, Carolyn can give you useful tips on perfect parallel parking, multi-storey parking, reversing etc.
